![]() ![]() ![]() In all, 14 men and four women happily got up on stage after being selected from the 800-person crowd by Tape Face. last year with a semifinalist showing on the TV competition "America's Got Talent," where contestants have roughly 90 seconds to perform, Tape Face emphatically proved Thursday night at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall that he can captivate for nearly 90 minutes.Ī skilled, expressive physical comedian, Tape Face uses everyday props and expertly selected musical snippets to evoke laughter with bits that roam from silly to cerebral, often with the assistance of audience members. The New Zealand-born Wills is changing that by introducing new audiences to the pleasures of silent comedy with his character Tape Face. In pop culture, mimes are dismissed as corny or twee, movies and television shows have gotten comedic mileage out of annoying sidewalk mimes being arrested or assaulted, and the website even has a section headlined "Everybody Hates Mimes." That's one way of starting a rave review without using the off-putting word "mime." The crowd: About 800, vocally appreciative and happy to get on stage See More Collapse Nobody in my group was interested in staying (14, 15, 9, 45, 47).Where: Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, State and Second streets, Troy The half an hour of show that we did stay for was mediocre at best, but the first 35 minutes of warm ups and talking with no substance already killed it for us. It’d be nice if he planted a crew member in the audience to bring the spontaneity into it. He also tells you that crew members will be used as “volunteers” since audience participation is not currently allowed (Covid). Also in the first 1/2 hour before the show, tape face talks about his history, his interactions with America’s got Talent judges, and he also tells you to let your mind escape into the silliness of his show (red flag). The first 1/2 an hour+ is watching an unfunny “warm-up” act that consisted of a ripped napkin trick (lame) and an overdone, old straight jacket escape (that I’ve already seen the same guy do as a warm up act for others). The show was supposed to start at 7:30, but it actually didn’t start until after 8. This show went below my low expectations. The Tape Face Show? I've seen it 10 times! Yes folks, it's that good! It's really that good. What a delightful world they have created! It's the rare show that entices me to return a second time. Adding to the fun are the gloriously goofy Phyllis Vanillis the Sanitation Specialist and gentle comic and magician Tyler Reid. There aren't enough superlatives to describe it. The show is wildly creative, mildly irreverant, silly, and playful in the purest sense of the word. They are treated with good humor and respect and the results are always hilarious. The show relies heavily on audience participation and the participants are guided masterfully by Tape Face. Tape Face communicates impeccably, conjuring magic out of mundane everyday objects and hilarity out of the ether. This is no "walking against the wind" kind of show. And, although his mouth is covered with tape, Tape Face is so much more than what you think of as a mime. It can exist in the creative exploration of everyday objects and set to familiar music that has been the soundtrack of our lives. Lovingly created by Sam Wills, a.k.a Tape Face, the show is a wacky and wonderful testament to the fact the best humor doesn't have to happen at the expense of others. It is a masterpiece of creativity, humor, and good will. The Zak Bagen tour was really popular too, so popular, we couldn’t get tickets. I wouldn’t sit through that crap, again, for free. I laughed during the middle of the show really hard because I could not believe I paid so much for something so bad. Tape Face needs to keep his mouth taped and go solo with some funny material. Really, really stupid and a complete waste of money for terrible material and annoying stage crew. ![]() Another 1/2 hour of his dumb teams’ attempt to provide completely imbecile slap stick comedy to fill time. Most of his “act” was a replication of his “good stuff” from AGT which probably took up 1/2 hour. It’s like a cross between Blues Clues, the Chucky Cheese band, the old man from The Muppets balcony, and Hee-Haw. He has a really annoying, over the top, team of four additional and very unlikable characters who accompany him on stage. The show consisted of Tape Face who comes out not in character prior to getting into character (poor choice-he shouldn’t be out of character at his show) and talks for a while presumably to stall because he doesn’t have enough material to fulfill the hour/hour and a half show. Paid almost $400, for 3 of us, because the 3 seat packages were sold out, we had to buy a 4th seat for no one. We were a fan of Tape Face from AGT and were ending our week with his show. ![]()
